Let’s be honest: dining rooms don’t typically get a lot of design love. While these formal spaces play host to some of the most important and memorable meals in any given year (namely Thanksgiving dinner), they tend to collect dust from January through October.
But, we’d argue that with the right color palette and some fresh dining room decor ideas, these classic spaces can be just as inviting and cozy as any living room—and can become prime spaces to gather all year round. In fact, dining rooms are the perfect candidates for intricate woodwork, moody paint, statement seating, atmospheric lighting, and eye-catching artwork.
Case in point: the seven dining rooms below from the talented Clare community. From Sam Moore’s minimalist Venice Beach bungalow to Leigh + Co Interiors’ dreamy cottage, all seven are brimming with color, personality, and warmth. To breathe new life into her seldom-used dining room, design blogger Elsie Larson started with a warm coat of Meet Cute, a romantic, rosy pink. She then offset the shade with a neutral shag rug, white curtains, crisp white trim, and a light oak dining table and chair set. The final look is warm, inviting, and on-trend.
Designer Kevin Frances O’Gara went the modern-traditional route when reimagining this classic dining room. Starting with a coat of Headspace on the walls, he then carried the blue-green hue throughout with floral-print dining chairs and turquoise candlesticks. Finished with a gorgeous burlwood credenza and warm oak dining table, the look is equal parts traditional and fresh.
Natural and earthy was the name of the game for this Leigh & Co Interiors-designed dining nook, and a coat of Dirty Martini was step one. Founder Hannah Kiemal then added subtle contrast with a tonal dark green ceiling, neutral furniture, and a stunning rust-flecked area rug. The finished product is cozy, cottagecore perfection.
Design blogger Joy Cho is known for her unique, playful designs, and her dining room is no exception. With a clean coat of our light beige Classic and neutral abstract wallpaper, Cho then layered in warm touches in the form of cognac dining chairs, a brass chandelier, woven wall art, and a few contrasting blue vases. The result? A heart-of-the-home gathering space that’s bursting with personality.
When curating her dream dining room in her Nashville home, designer Sam Cram decided to bring the drama with a Blackest accent wall. For a much-needed dose of levity, she went with a rounded white chandelier, scripted wall art, clean white drapes, and a subtle pop of coral on the dining chairs. The end result? A moody dining room you can’t wait to spend time in.
Bored with her beige-on-beige dining room, blogger Pennies for a Fortune decided to go all out. To start, she installed a board-and-batten accent wall and adjacent wainscotting (painted in our green-grey Motor City). Coupled with tufted dining chairs, vintage art, traditional sconces, a farmhouse-style chandelier, and soft geometric wallpaper, the final look is modern farmhouse perfection.
In her Venice Beach bungalow, tastemaker Sam Moore stayed true to her minimalist roots. She started with a crisp coat of our best-selling warm white Whipped, and added contrast with bold black dining chairs and sculptural shelf accents. Finished with a beautiful light oak dining table, understated sconces, and a floral centerpiece, her dining room is warm minimalism at its finest.
