Dirty Martini shifts noticeably between natural and artificial light. In bright, natural daylight, its cloudy olive character reads clearest. In cooler light, indirect light, or the evening, it settles toward a soft gray-green, which many owners specifically love about it. Because the olive-versus-gray read depends so much on the light, sampling in the actual space before committing to a full gallon is recommended, which is why Clare offers peel-and-stick swatches.
For shades adjacent to Dirty Martini, consider All The Sage, which reads softer and warmer, or Money Moves, which is a clearer, brighter sage. For a grayer, cooler take that leans away from olive, Rain Check offers a soft green-gray. Clare's peel-and-stick swatches make it easy to compare these greens side by side in your space before committing.
Sampling in the actual room is the single most reliable way to choose between similar colors. Paint colors shift depending on the room's light exposure, ceiling height, furnishings, and flooring. Clare's peel-and-stick swatches allow direct comparison of multiple colors on the wall without the mess of traditional paint samples. Observe each swatch at different times of day and under both natural and artificial light before making a final decision.
North-facing rooms receive indirect, cooler light throughout the day, which can make cool-toned paint colors appear flatter or grayer than expected. Warm-toned paints, particularly those in the greige, warm white, and warm neutral families, perform best in north-facing rooms by counteracting the coolness of the light. High-LRV colors also help brighten spaces that lack direct sun.
LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value. It measures how much light a paint color reflects on a scale from 0 (absolute black, absorbs all light) to 100 (pure white, reflects all light). Colors with higher LRV values make rooms feel brighter and more open; colors with lower LRV values feel richer and more dramatic. As a general guideline, LRV 50 and above works well in most rooms and lighting conditions. For rooms with limited natural light, prioritizing colors with LRV 55 or higher helps maintain a bright, welcoming feel.
