Motor City holds its cool, medium gray character across lighting conditions. In bright, natural daylight, the faint cool undertone comes forward and the gray reads crisp, clean, and quietly modern. Under warm incandescent or LED lighting in the evening, the color settles and reads a touch deeper and more grounded while staying clearly in gray territory. One reviewer described it as having almost a hint of blue in certain lights, which captures how the cool quality surfaces differently depending on the room's light source. Sampling in the actual space before committing to a full gallon is always recommended, which is why Clare offers peel-and-stick swatches.
For shades adjacent to Motor City, consider Grayish, which reads the green undertone more obviously at a slightly lighter depth, or Seize The Gray, which is a pure neutral gray with no undertone for buyers who want clean, uninfluenced gray. For something lighter and even more subtle, Chill barely reads its green quality. For significantly more depth, Irony goes to a dark charcoal at LRV 17. Clare's peel-and-stick swatches make it easy to compare these grays side by side in your space before committing.
Sampling in the actual room is the single most reliable way to choose between similar colors. Paint colors shift depending on the room's light exposure, ceiling height, furnishings, and flooring. Clare's peel-and-stick swatches allow direct comparison of multiple colors on the wall without the mess of traditional paint samples. Observe each swatch at different times of day and under both natural and artificial light before making a final decision.
LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value. It measures how much light a paint color reflects on a scale from 0 (absolute black, absorbs all light) to 100 (pure white, reflects all light). Colors with higher LRV values make rooms feel brighter and more open; colors with lower LRV values feel richer and more dramatic. As a general guideline, LRV 50 and above works well in most rooms and lighting conditions. For rooms with limited natural light, prioritizing colors with LRV 55 or higher helps maintain a bright, welcoming feel.
For small bedrooms, high-LRV colors (LRV 55 and above) open up the space and make it feel larger. Clare On Point, Whipped and Timeless all work well in smaller bedrooms. Soft warm neutrals in the greige and warm beige families add coziness without closing the space in. For small bedrooms where drama is the goal, low-LRV colors like Deep Dive or Current Mood work beautifully when balanced with strong light sources and light-colored furnishings.
Recommended Clare paint to new clients. We purchased 3 gallons for a basement family room. Client loved it! Turned out gorgeous!

For a living and dining room that share a vaulted ceiling with a wood center beam at the peak I used three colors, shades of Gray; Shade for the wood beam and other wooden accent trim around the top of an inset-room; Chill for the walls of the living room and dining room; and, Motor City for the walls of the inset-room. Very subtle, very calming and oddly, it seems quieter as well.
Thanks to Clare for its 10 swatch packets to select color combo's for the color challenged like myself.

I was looking for a grey for my entryway, upper and downstairs hallways. I pretty much ordered all of the grey swatches Clare has. I was looking for a medium toned grey that would brighten up my walls. I went with Motor City. It almost has a tinge of blue but it the perfect neutral grey to balance out other colors in my house (Meet Cute, Dirty Martini and Whipped)
