From Attic Storage to Dreamy Hideout: The Bunk Room Every Kid (and Parent) Wants

When you picture a kids’ bunk room, your brain might immediately go to primary colors, cartoon racecar decals and maybe a superhero bedspread. But what if we told you a bunk room could be both kid-friendly and totally design-magazine-worthy? That’s exactly what designer Whitney Romanoff, owner and principal designer of Meet West, pulled off in this dreamy attic transformation.

Painted head-to-toe in Good Jeans (a rich denim blue that’s equal parts calm and cool) and paired with an en suite bathroom in Rain Check, this Fayetteville, Arkansas home proves a kids’ space can be a little grown up without losing any of its magic.

Lost Boys, but Make It Chic

When Whitney’s clients, a family with three adventurous boys under 8, asked her to make their unused attic functional; she didn’t just see sloped ceilings and dusty drywall. She saw Never Land.

“Our inspiration was Peter Pan’s Lost Boys,” says Whitney. “We wanted it to feel transportive, like their own private upstairs escape.”

So, she took that vision and color-drenched the entire bunk space and closet floor to ceiling in Good Jeans. The result? A cozy hideaway that feels rich and imaginative but still polished enough to flow with the rest of the family’s historic Craftsman home (built circa 1910!).

The Bathroom That Could (and Did)

Down the hall, the attic’s long-neglected bathroom got its own moment to shine. After sitting gutted and unfinished for six years (we’ve all had that “I’ll get to it later” project), it was finally brought back to life in Rain Check, a light, fresh shade with hints of earthy green and gray.

“It’s bright and airy, but not just white,” says Whitney. “It connects perfectly to the denim tones outside the bathroom.”

Between the color and the new fixtures, this bathroom basically went from “yikes” to “you might catch the adults sneaking in here for a bubble bath.”

Details That Steal the Show

This space isn’t all paint (though, we’ll admit, it’s the star of the show). Whitney and team added custom built-in bunks, integrated wardrobes and a creative desk area for the boys’ art projects, reading time, and, of course, fort-building operations.

And because every great design needs a touch of whimsy, they threw in:

A tapestry-inspired wallpaper that pulls out the blue tones in Good Jeans.

A 1920s Swedish armchair (yes, vintage, yes, adorable) in the original upholstery for reading.

And our personal favorite, a brass octopus towel hook. Because nothing says “Never Land” like a fancy octopus holding your towel.

The Final Look: Kid-Approved, Designer-Endorsed

The boys love it (“they said they get to live in their own fantasy world!”), and we can totally see why. The space strikes that perfect balance between adventure and sophistication, with just enough imagination to keep the kids inspired and just enough polish to make the grown-ups proud.

Whitney says it best: “Paint is always the most budget-friendly and easiest way to completely transform the mood of a space.”

Consider this your sign to rethink what a kids’ room can look like, with a little help from the right colors (and maybe a magical octopus or two).
