When interior designer and vintage rug connoisseur Gretchen Rose moved into her charming 1980s two-story brick home, she quickly realized her bedroom needed a makeover. With a growing family of four (plus two fur babies), her Louisville bedroom no longer reflected her personality. The transformation wasn’t about rushing to perfection, but about creating a space that truly felt right. This led to a vintage-inspired makeover that turned her bedroom into an antique retreat, infused with a blue bedroom vibe that perfectly reflected her eclectic style.

Hodge Podge, But Make It Classic 

When Gretchen first moved in, the bedroom was painted a navy blue by the previous owners. While the color wasn’t "wrong," it lacked a personal touch, and Gretchen knew it needed something more to fit her vibe. "The navy blue the previous owners had chosen was fine, but it didn’t quite fit my style. So, halfway through my second pregnancy, I decided it was time for a refresh. A new color, new light (goodbye, cheap faux mid-century sputnik light!), custom drapes and a beautiful rug transformed the room, bringing it to life and aligning it more with my personal style." 

Gretchen was ready to update the space to meet her family’s needs while embracing her eclectic roots. Her vision was to create a blue bedroom that balanced her southern heritage with a colorful, fun and timeless aesthetic. "Inspired by my love of history and antiques, especially antique rugs, my bedroom would reflect a lively yet classic aesthetic," Gretchen explains. 

Choosing the Perfect Blue 

Having worked with us before and always impressed with the results (we’re blushing,) Gretchen was determined to use our paint for her blue bedroom makeover. Her choice? The soft yet vibrant Good Jeans. "I had already used Views and Make Waves throughout the house, so rounding out my blue collection with Good Jeans felt like the perfect choice," Gretchen shared. This color wasn’t just about a shade—it was about creating the atmosphere for her blue bedroom, which would radiate timelessness and fun. 

The room’s two windows let in plenty of natural light, so the light blue tone of Good Jeans was ideal. It worked perfectly for a bedroom, a space for relaxation, where the blue could shine without overwhelming the senses. 

Bringing the Vision to Life 

Once the color was chosen, it was time to execute the vision. Gretchen removed the old faux mid-century sputnik light, replacing it with something more fitting to her personal style. Custom drapes were added to tie in with the blue bedroom color palette, and a gorgeous antique rug completed the picture. The result was a space that truly reflected her eclectic taste and timeless style. 

The Power of Blue 

The transformation didn’t stop with just a fresh coat of paint. Good Jeans made the room feel like a warm embrace, creating the perfect environment to unwind at the end of the day. “It feels like a relaxing hug,” Gretchen says, highlighting the soothing nature of the color. A unique design decision was to paint the trim, not only on the baseboards but also on the ceiling in the same shade, adding drama and a sense of unity to the space.

The wooden bed frame and headboard beautifully complemented the bold blue, creating a striking visual contrast. "I love how the wood stain contrasts against the blue," Gretchen noted. Every detail was carefully chosen to ensure that the blue bedroom was cohesive yet visually engaging, with each element standing out without overwhelming the space.
